Description
Description | Sign language interpreting plays a vital role in securing the linguistic rights of Deaf communities across Europe. Yet, training access and recognition remain deeply unequal, particularly for Deaf interpreters, who often face systemic exclusion (De Wit, 2016; Stone, 2009). As the only European umbrella organisation for the profession, efsli addresses these disparities through inclusive CPD, strategic advocacy, and support to national associations (NASLIs). Over the next years, efsli will: - Expand certified CPD for Deaf and hearing interpreters; - Develop a European recognition framework for Deaf interpreters; - Defend human interpreting in the face of AI-driven automation. New studies warn of AI’s threat to Deaf linguistic rights (Angelini et al., 2024; De Meulder et al., 2025). efsli is responding with a dedicated expert group and policy engagement to ensure Deaf communities retain control over how they access information. efsli’s approach combines training, research, and political action. Through its website, newsletter, social media, annual conference, and efsli Day, it ensures wide dissemination and engagement. By linking grassroots realities to EU priorities, efsli acts as a central force for inclusion, linguistic equity, and professional development. |
