Increasing the railway freight and passenger capacity at Copenhagen Airport and Kalvebod to civilian and military dual use (Study)

The objective of the Project is to conduct studies related to the preparation for the construction of a passing track at Kalvebod (western Copenhagen) and a turnback track for trains at Copenhagen Airport Station. Both sections are part of the Scan-Med Core Network Corridor. The studies include conceptual design, environmental screening (and EIA if necessary), design and tender documents for the

Description
Description | The objective of the Project is to conduct studies related to the preparation for the construction of a passing track at Kalvebod (western Copenhagen) and a turnback track for trains at Copenhagen Airport Station. Both sections are part of the Scan-Med Core Network Corridor. The studies include conceptual design, environmental screening (and EIA if necessary), design and tender documents for the subsequent works The Project is required as the capacity of the railway line at Copenhagen Airport Station is insufficient to handle the future volume of passenger and freight trains including military assets on this line. This will cause a bottleneck on the Global Project, i.e., the cross-border link København-Hamburg via Fehmarnbelt with access lines. The Project addresses these needs since the studies will provide the decision-making tools to upgrade the capacity of these two sections and thereby remove this bottleneck. As the Øresund bridge is the only fixed link between Scandinavia and the rest of Europe, the Project is crucial also from a military mobility perspective. The main contribution of the Project is to: - Resolve an urgent issue of capacity constraints, which would increase due to more freight and passenger volumes in the coming years due to mixed operation of freight trains in transit between Germany and Sweden and passenger trains, especially once the Fehmarnbelt fixed link (Global Project) opens. - Enable transport of oversized and overloaded military vehicles. - Increase the capacity of the Øresund line enabling more trains via the Øresund link. - Achieve travel time savings towards Copenhagen Airport in general. - Fulfil military mobility requirements. - Prevent delayed trains from Sweden causing delays on other parts of the Danish railway network, especially on the congested lines around the urban node Copenhagen. The result will be the conceptual designs for the two sections, and the contract award for the implementation of the subsequent works for the passing track in Kalvebod. |
