Description
Description | The Project concerns works to upgrade the existing Danish railway on the section Copenhagen S-Copenhagen Airport Railway Station, which is a section on the Scan-Med Core Network Corridor. The works cover the construction of passing tracks at Kalvebod (western Copenhagen): civil and railway works, validation and assessment according to the safety & interoperability requirements, application for APIS, and commissioning of the finalised Project. The Project is required as the capacity of the railway line west of the Øresund bridge is insufficient to handle the future volume of passenger and freight trains including military assets on this line. This will cause a bottleneck on the Global Project, i.e., the cross-border link København-Hamburg via Fehmarnbelt with access lines. As the Øresund bridge is the only fixed link between Scandinavia and the rest of Europe, the Project is crucial also from a military mobility perspective. A timely implementation of the Project is important to harness all potential impact of the Global Project, i.e., reaching its overall goals including modal shift to sustainable freight and passenger transport and economic growth along the corridor. The Project is the next phase following preparational studies and complementing the introduction of directional operation at Copenhagen Airport Railway Station on the same section, both co-funded under the CEF. The Project will: - Resolve an urgent issue of capacity constraints, which would increase due to more freight and passenger volumes in the coming years due to mixed operation of freight trains in transit between Germany and Sweden and passenger trains, especially once the Fehmarnbelt tunnel opens. - Fulfil military requirements thereby enabling transport of oversized and overloaded military vehicles. - Increase the capacity of the Øresund line enabling more trains via the Øresund Link. |
