Independence Pass Seasonal Maintenance and Reopening

Independence Pass, a two-lane, 12,095-foot road, closes annually for the winter season and is undergoing preparations for its spring reopening. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) are monitoring snowpack and road conditions to ensure safety. Maintenance work includes pothole repairs, guardrail system repairs or replacements, shoulder assessments, clearing drainage ditches and culverts, and signage replacements. The reopening is typically scheduled for the Thursday prior to Memorial Day, with the earliest recent opening being May 11, 2012. The maintenance teams aim to extend the road's lifespan and prioritize safety before opening the pass to the public.
