Description

Independent Power Tanzania Ltd (IPTL), a joint venture between MechMar Energy Sdn Bhd of Malaysia (70%) and local firm VIP Engineering and Marketing Ltd. (30%), is developing a 100-MW diesel-fired power plant at Tegata. The project is being developed under a 20-year BOT contractual framework. Electrogen of South Africa is the primary contractor. Fieldstone Private Capital Group (Asia) Ltd was the project's financial advisor. Project completion is targeted for the third quarter of 1998. Tanesco's obligations will be guaranteed by the Government of Tanzania. Estimated project cost is 400 million ringit or $127 million. Construction began in August 1997. Financial closure was reached with the signing of a syndicated loan facility worth $105 million with two Malaysian banks, Bank Bumiputera Malaysia Bhd and Sime Bank Bhd. The project has a debt/equity ratio of 70:30. IPTL signed a 20-year power-purchase-agreement with the Tanzania Electric Company (Tanesco). None
