Description
Description | The Ganges Water Sharing Treaty between India and Bangladesh, signed in 1996, is set to expire in December 2026. Both countries are engaging in preliminary talks and data sharing to negotiate renewal terms that better reflect Bangladesh's agricultural and domestic water needs. The treaty divides water at the Farakka headwaters between the Hooghly and the Padma rivers on a roughly equal basis. The treaty is likely to be extended in the short term and renegotiated properly over the coming year, considering challenges such as Himalayan glacial retreat reducing water volume. |
