Description | India is rapidly scaling up its renewable energy capacity, with renewable sources accounting for 53% of the total installed power generation capacity of 532 GW. To manage the intermittent nature of renewable energy, India plans to massively scale up energy storage capacity, focusing on pumped hydro storage (PHS) and battery energy storage systems (BESS). The Central Electricity Authority projects total energy storage capacity to reach 174 GW by 2035-36, including 80 GW of BESS and 94 GW of PHS. Currently, 13,120 MW of PHS and 10,658.94 MW of BESS capacity are under construction, with additional projects in planning and tendering stages. However, India faces challenges due to heavy dependence on imports for lithium-ion battery cells. |
