India: Secondary Education Project

The development objective of the Secondary Education Project for India is to achieve increased and more equitable access to good quality secondary education through support of the Government's ongoing program for secondary education as delineated in the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) framework. Improving quality, equity and accountability in secondary education financial and technical support to activities funded under the RMSA Framework (US$500 million; Government of India (GoI) US$12,306 million, Department for International Development (DFID) US$90 million), designed to expand access, enhance equity, and improve quality of secondary education; and in particular, support new innovations and expansion of promising pilot programs. Quality improvement activities include teacher professional development, recruitment of additional teachers, and capacity building of local institutions to support change. Access will be expanded through new and upgraded schools, especially in underserved areas, outreach to communities, more relevant learning materials and better teachers. Innovations will be supported through new activities of the RMSA program, with clear guidelines for application and appraisal of proposals.
