Indian Railways Hydrogen-Powered Train Pilot Project

Indian Railways is developing hydrogen-powered trains as a sustainable alternative to diesel and electric trains. The pilot project involves converting a Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) rake into a hydrogen-powered train to operate on the Jind-Sonipat section of Northern Railway. The project includes the establishment of hydrogen production and refuelling infrastructure in Jind, Haryana, with a 1 MW PEM electrolyser and associated storage and dispensing facilities. The first hydrogen train trials began in April 2025, with plans to introduce the train on the Kalka–Shimla route by mid-2025.
