Description

Description

The Indian Railways is preparing to roll out its first hydrogen-powered train, which is the most powerful hydrogen train in the world with a 2400 kW Hydrogen Train Set. The train has 10 coaches and runs on hydrogen fuel cells that generate electricity by combining hydrogen with oxygen, producing only water vapor as a by-product. This project is part of Indian Railways' broader push to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030 and aims to provide a cleaner alternative to diesel trains on non-electrified routes, especially in challenging terrains where electrification is difficult or expensive. Hydrogen trains are positioned as a bridge solution, cleaner than diesel and more flexible than full electrification for specific routes. Challenges include the high cost of green hydrogen production and the need for hydrogen storage, refueling, and safety infrastructure along railway routes.
