Description | India plans to integrate vast amounts of renewable energy requiring an estimated 411.4 GWh of energy storage by 2031-32, largely from Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Despite 12.8 GWh of BESS capacity awarded in auctions between 2022 and May 2025, only 0.8 GWh is operational due to implementation challenges including aggressive underbidding, delayed Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), grid congestion, and slow domestic manufacturing growth. The government supports domestic manufacturing through an ₹18,100 crore Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme targeting 50 GWh capacity, but only 1.4 GWh had been commissioned by October 2025. These issues threaten India's renewable energy goals and energy transition. |
