India's First Hydrogen-Powered Train

Indian Railways is set to launch the country's first hydrogen-powered train, marking a significant step in sustainable transportation. The train, developed at Chennai's Integral Coach Factory, features a 1,200 HP hydrogen propulsion system adapted from a diesel electric multiple unit (DEMU) using hydrogen fuel cells. The inaugural service will operate between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana, with a capacity of up to 2,600 passengers. The project is part of the 'Hydrogen for Heritage' initiative, envisioning 35 such trains for heritage and hill routes. Supporting infrastructure includes hydrogen production, storage, and dispensing facilities, with fuel supplied by a 1 MW PEM electrolyser in Jind, operated by GreenH Electrolysis. Indian Railways also plans to introduce five hydrogen fuel cell-based tower cars for maintenance operations.
