Description | India is developing its first indigenously made hydrogen-powered train with a power capacity of 1,200 horsepower, which is more than double the strength of similar hydrogen trains globally. The train uses fuel cells to generate electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen, releasing only water vapor as a byproduct, making it a zero-emission transport. A pilot project worth ₹111.83 crore was launched to retrofit a Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) with hydrogen fuel cells to run on the Jind-Sonipat section of Northern Railway. The Railways Ministry allocated Rs 2,800 crore in 2023-24 to develop a fleet of 35 hydrogen fuel cell-based trains under the 'Hydrogen for Heritage' initiative, intended for heritage and hill routes across India. |
