Description

Description

India's largest underground liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) storage facility with a capacity of 80,000 metric tonnes has been completed in Mangaluru. The project involved excavating a large rock formation 500 meters below the surface to create a secure cavern. It was initiated in 2018 with construction starting in 2019 and completed at a cost of approximately ₹800 crore. The facility has passed rigorous safety tests and is ready for operation in emergency situations. A floating jetty and pipeline connectivity have been constructed to allow direct pumping of LPG from sea-based carriers, enhancing import and storage capabilities. This is the second underground LPG storage cavern in India, surpassing the first in Visakhapatnam with a capacity of 60,000 metric tonnes. Mangaluru also hosts other underground crude oil storage caverns, making it a key energy hub.
