India's Renewable Energy Transmission and Storage Infrastructure Expansion

India aims to install 500 GW of non-fossil fuel based power capacity by 2030, with a significant focus on solar and wind energy. However, the country's power transmission network and energy storage infrastructure are lagging behind, causing over 50 GW of renewable capacity to remain stranded. The government has planned to add over 1.91 lakh circuit kilometers of transmission lines and 1,270 GVA of transformation capacity by 2031-32, along with increasing inter-regional transmission capacity. There is also a critical need to expand battery energy storage systems from the current 205 MW to meet the projected 411.4 GWh requirement by 2031-32. The project involves upgrading transmission infrastructure, improving grid management, and developing large-scale energy storage to support the renewable energy transition.
