Description
Description | This project will improve community-based childcare provision and women’s economic participation in selected villages. This will be achieved through a multi-pronged approach. Accessibility of childcare services will be enhanced through improvements to existing services or establishment of new services in villages where coverage is insufficient to meet demand. The project will also improve the quality of childcare services by providing basic learning materials for children; establishing guidelines and minimum quality standards; providing a family changemaking class to mothers, fathers, and caretakers; and adopting an updated curriculum for children’s development. Women’s economic outcomes will be improved through targeted livelihood support activities for mothers whose children are enrolled in childcare services. This will include livelihood skills training, support in accessing inputs and markets, and access to economic cooperatives and networks. Finally, the project will engage in advocacy to secure financial support for childcare services from subnational governments to promote sustainability beyond the project lifetime. The project will be implemented in 100 villages across 9 provinces of Indonesia: Aceh, North Sumatra, West Kalimantan, Banten, Central Java, West Java, East Java, Yogyakarta, and West Nusa Tenggara. In these provinces, the implementing agency and grant recipient, PEKKA Foundation, will work through its network of local Pekka unions to implement project activities at village level. The project will cover 27 villages where there is already an active PAUD or childcare service operated by PEKKA, and 73 villages that will be chosen randomly from a longlist of 200 villages to allow for an experimental impact evaluation. All villages targeted by the project are in rural areas, are considered poor, and need improved childcare services. The direct beneficiaries are households who enroll their children in childcare services in the selected villages, and the indirect beneficiaries include other childcare facilities and households in the selected villages and those in nearby villages. |
