Indus Waters Treaty Suspension and Water Sharing Dispute

abeyance/suspended

Following the Pahalgam terror attack in April 2025, India has placed the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) with Pakistan in abeyance, suspending water sharing under the treaty. This has led to increased pressure on Pakistan, with Pakistani media and western think tanks pushing for India to relent and restore the treaty. India is trying for optimal use of the waters of the Indus River System with dams, and has linked the treaty suspension to Pakistan's role in terrorism. The treaty was originally signed in 1960 and facilitated by the World Bank, allowing Pakistan to use waters of the western rivers of the Indus River System.
