Industrial Internet Applications in Winter Road Maintenance

Transport needs in the north face major challenges as more heavy transport for the raw material-intensive industry, increased tourism and more private travel. This transport needs require safe, accessible and sustainable road infrastructure in all types of weather and road conditions. Today, winter road maintenance is heavily controlled based on stationary road weather stations that report meteorological data, as well as subjective reporting from plow trucks and controllers. By transferring real-time data from vehicles travelling on the roads to a cloud-based system, a comprehensive real-time picture of the prevailing conditions on a road network can be generated. The development of visualisation and decision support based on the new information will create a more efficient winter road management. External measurement and data communication systems will be placed on vehicles to demonstrate a commercializable Industrial Internet solution for optimal winter road maintenance. The target group of Wirma is the private sector and the project will increase companies’ ability to develop new products and services in the emerging field of Industrial Internet. The results of the project will be disseminated through conference presentations and scientific articles. Information and results will also be publicly disseminated through popular science articles, project website and relevant social media. After the project period, the vision is for the companies involved to present new products and services to the market. One goal of the project is to develop a Horizon 2020 project.
