The Thermal Power and Sea Water Distillation Project for Malta consist of the construction of the first stage of the Malta "B" thermal power plant, and the sea water distillation station to be operated by steam supplied by from the thermal power generating plant with a capacity of one million gallons per day, located at the head of the Grand Harbor in the city of Valletta; the provision of twin water mains from the station to Luqa reservoir; and the provision of workshop, offices and storage buildings. The project is needed to meet growing demands for electric power and drinking water in Malta. The construction of the Malta "B" thermal power and sea water distillation station is an economical means of increasing generating capacity and is considered by the Government's consulting engineers to be the only practical means of providing additional fresh water which can no longer be met from natural sources. The combination of these new installations provides savings both in initial investment and in operating costs, thus contributing to the economic growth and social development of Malta.
