Description
Description | The project consists of readying the infrastructure of the Metrobus facilities and equipment in St. John’s to support the purchase of zero emission transit buses in the City of St. John’s. In 2022, City of St. John’s committed to a target of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, aligning with Canada’s targets set through the Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act. This project is a step towards meeting this objective, and builds on the Resilient St. John’s Community Climate Plan. The City of St. John’s is currently conducting an electrification study to identify the required equipment to support the electrification of the bus fleet. Based on the recommendations of the study’s final report in June 2023, this project will support the work necessary to upgrade the Metrobus facilities. This is one of several Public Transit Infrastructure Stream projects submitted by St. John’s which will support both the purchase of electric or alternative propulsion buses and installing the necessary technological upgrades to support the buses and larger net-zero targets. The project aims to ensure the stability and continuity of transit service in the City of St. John’s while showing a commitment to the reduction of climate change by moving to an electric bus model. The project will improve capacity of public transit infrastructure for residents in St. John’s. |
