The objective of this project is to strengthen and expand existing GIS capabilities of the Dirección Nacional de Topografía and to develop specific GIS-based analytical and decision-making applications for the Dirección Nacional de Vialidad. The focus will be on the development and implementation of GIS tools and spatial databases to assist highway planning and infrastructure management, pavement management and regional transportation analyses, and integration of these models and spatial data into an Information System for National Infrastructure Management and Planning. In addition, the models and spatial databases produced under this Technical Cooperation will contribute to the development of studies aimed at quantifying and qualifying the social and environmental consequences of highway projects and of other infrastructure projects in which the Bank is presently involved. It will also provide the MTOP and the Bank with additional analytical tools and spatial data to support the study of the integration corridors in the Mercosur region. The analytical capabilities to be provided by the system will provide support for the preparation and planning of new projects and the execution of existing projects, in particular UR-0135 Infrastructure Investment Program and TC98-06227 Buenos Aires-Colonia Bridge Project.
