Description

Description

Improvements in the water distribution system will improve water quality and fire flows in these areas. Overall, the detailed design work will provide for the replacement of approximately 6.7 km of water lines, wastewater and necessary road work. This includes badly corroded 150 and 200 mm unlined cast iron pipe that is presently at the end of its life cycle; allow for the elimination of 3 continuous bleeder lines required to maintain chlorine residue; and will improve efficiencies in the water system by eliminating the need for circulating pumps, reducing the costs of chemicals and energy required to treat the water. The water distribution system is mainly comprised of 150 mm unlined cast iron pipes, one section is 200 mm unlined cast iron and serves 308 households. The design will also include the main feed line from the water treatment plant to the town and the water tower, the main line has been identified as being at the end of useful life and a break in this section could have catastrophic results in the loss of the distribution system, as it is believed that any break would create such a strain on the system that it could lead to a series of breaks once any repair is pressurized. The main feed line is also unlined cast iron and varies from 300 - 400 mm, is 3200 metres in length and would affect all residents served by the municipal water system, approximately 2,040 households and businesses.
