Description

Description

Inland Rail was intended to be a 1600-kilometre rail artery stretching from Melbourne to Brisbane, designed to support double-stacked freight trains. It was described as Australia's largest rail project in a century and a nation-building infrastructure initiative. The project north of Parkes in central New South Wales has been axed by the Federal Government due to cost estimates exceeding $45 billion. Construction will be completed between Beveridge in Victoria and Parkes by the end of 2027 with $1.75 billion in previously announced off-budget funding. Works north of Parkes will now focus on preservation of the rail corridor and protecting sites for future intermodal terminals in Queensland.
