Description

Description

The Inland Rail Project was a $45 billion+ freight rail infrastructure project originally planned to run approximately 1,700 km from Melbourne to a port near Brisbane, connecting Victoria with New South Wales and Queensland. The project aimed to improve national freight efficiency by enabling double-stacked freight trains and strengthening east-west freight connectivity. Due to significant cost overruns and planning challenges, the project was abandoned in its original full scope and scaled back to connect Beveridge (near Melbourne) to Parkes in central-west New South Wales, reducing the length by more than half. The government reallocated $1.75 billion of the funding to other national rail upgrades, with the revised section expected to be completed by late 2027.
