Innovation in the Solid Waste Management Sector in Belize

The objective of SWMP II is to support Belize in its efforts to reduce environmental pollution through the improvement of solid waste management practices in emerging tourism destinations in northern and southern Belize, as well as in Belize's capital, Belmopan. Specifically, the project is financing investments to improve solid waste transport, recovery, and final disposal in towns and villages in the Northern (Orange Walk and Corozal) and Southern (Stann Creek and Toledo) Corridors and in Belmopan. The project is also aimed at strengthening SWaMA as the lead agency in the waste management sector. The dumpsites to be closed are those of Corozal Town, Orange Walk Town, Belmopan City, Dangriga Town, Placencia, and Punta Gorda Town. In these areas, transfer stations are presently being built. The objectives of the operation are to be achieved through investments in two components.
