Description

Description

The project aims to mitigate the impacts of increasing heatwaves and the urban heat island effect in cities and their Functional Urban Areas (FUAs). While Debrecen (Hungary) and Oradea (Romania) are key implementation sites, the approach is designed to be applicable across various FUAs in Europe. By integrating climate vulnerability assessments and high-resolution climate models (SURFEX), the project will identify vulnerable hotspots and implement adaptive interventions in both urban and peri-urban areas. These Climate Vulnerability Assessments (CVAs) will guide the development of practical recommendations at the FUA level. The results will inform policy-making at local and regional levels, supporting a more integrated approach for FUAs to better adapt to climate change in Hungary and Romania. Recognizing that climate impacts vary across urban areas, the project supports place-specific adaptation strategies for different neighborhoods and public spaces. This will enhance resilience in pilot FUAs and provide a replicable model for other cities facing similar challenges. The project aligns with the LIFE Work Programme’s goal of enhancing climate adaptation at local and regional levels. It emphasizes multi-level governance, knowledge sharing, and joint climate adaptation efforts through cross-border cooperation between Debrecen and Oradea. In addressing health impacts of heatwaves, particularly in vulnerable populations, and integrating climate data into urban planning frameworks, the project also supports systematic, smarter adaptation planning. By fostering collaboration and implementing innovative, scalable solutions, the project will serve as a vital step towards building climate-resilient cities and Functional Urban Areas across Europe, ensuring that local governments are better equipped to tackle the increasing challenges of climate change.
