Description
Description | CALIPSO addresses great challenges for European defense autonomy, sustainability and operability, focusing on naval and land defense sectors. The project seeks to revolutionize military vehicle propulsion by integrating sustainable fuel technologies (spin-in from civil sector). Key objectives of CALIPSO include: (1) Assessing the feasibility, cost-effectiveness and environmental impact of fossil fuel alternatives for naval and land platforms; (2) Providing roadmaps for the gradual introduction of Innovative Propulsion Systems (IPS) in defense applications; (3) Increasing the competitive advantage of European companies in the defense industry, fostering economic growth & sustainability; (4) Reinforcing EU Defense Technological and Industrial Base autonomy & reducing dependence on non-EU innovations; (5) Fostering cross-border cooperation with a consortium comprising 40 SMEs, high-tech companies, midcaps and research organizations; (6) Enhancing energy supply resilience & reducing EU dependence on imported fossil fuels. The project encompasses Key Innovation Technologies (KITs) and Demonstrations (DEMs) covering the entire value chain, including sustainable fuel storage, refueling, power conversion and usage. CALIPSO strategically aligns with the EU Renewable and Low Carbon Fuels industrial alliance, ensuring fuel flexibility, cutting-edge technologies and market opportunities. Implemented through a structured approach over 36 months, CALIPSO begins with defining operational requirements and concludes with the demonstration of the most promising IPS in a representative military environment. The project aims to achieve significant impacts, including the spin-in of 22 civil R&D projects, involving 14 Member States and Norway, and alignment with EU Green Deal targets. CALIPSO emerges as a key player in enhancing the autonomy of the EU's defense industrial sector, fostering cross-border cooperation and contributing to innovation and sustainability across the entire value chain. |
