Description
Description | In the Indian metropolis of Mumbai, urbanization combined with a rapidly growing motorization rate in an already extremely dense population and in the absence of efficient public transport systems is leading to an overload of the existing transport systems. This not only represents an obstacle to economic development, but is also a major burden on the city's environment and the health of its residents and the climate. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is therefore developing a city-wide metro system. KfW is supporting MMRDA in the realization of a section of around 34 km, Line 4&4A. The infrastructure consists of the route, 34 stations and a depot. This route will be elevated as a viaduct, essentially in the middle or parallel to main roads. KfW's financing concerns the technical components such as vehicles, route equipment and station equipment. In order to improve the connection to other means of transport and access to the stations, KfW is also financing multimodal integration measures such as the construction and extension of footpaths and cycle paths within a radius of around half a kilometer around the stations and the connection of bus lines. The aim of the KfW financing is therefore to increase and sustain the use of an energy-efficient, integrated public transport system in the Mumbai metropolitan region. The borrower is the state of India, represented by the Ministry of Finance. The project sponsor is the MMRDA. The target group of the project are the potential users of the metro line and the residents in the catchment area of the metro stations, as well as indirectly the entire population of Mumbai, who will benefit from the expected positive environmental and health effects and increased economic productivity. |
