Description
Description | The central aim of the FC module is to promote the identification, designation and recognition of areas outside of state protected areas whose main concern is not the protection of nature, but which preserve biodiversity as a by-product in the long term through effective measures - such as indigenous territories with little human use (so-called Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures, OECMs). The project thus makes a significant contribution to the implementation of the international Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, in particular to achieving strategic objective 1 (Reducing threats to biodiversity) and its core objective 3. Within the framework of the module, indigenous peoples and local communities (target group) are rewarded (financially compensated) for ensuring the long-term preservation of biodiversity in the areas they collectively manage and thereby providing important ecosystem services. The compensation payments financed from project funds can be used to partially finance investments in the communities that serve the common good, which are defined in participatory local development plans. The aim of the FC module is for indigenous peoples and local communities in Central America to make a long-term contribution to the preservation of biodiversity in strategically important ecosystems, to secure their livelihoods and to strengthen their self-determination. The direct target group are indigenous peoples and local communities that protect strategically important ecosystems in prioritized landscapes in Central America and use their natural resources sustainably. According to current estimates by the project sponsor, around 20,000 people will benefit directly from the project's measures. |
