Description

Description

The Senegal Integrated Marine and Coastal Resources Management Project aims to increase the sustainable management of marine and coastal resources in three pilot areas by communities and the Government. Sustainable management includes responsible exploitation o f resources combined with protection o f the ecosystems and ecological processes critical for their replenishment. There are three project components with multiple subcomponents. Component 1 increases the sustainability of fisheries through the use of area-based co-management. Component 1 includes three sub-components: National level activities to improve fisheries management, promotion and coordination of local co-management initiatives, and Institutional strengthening and capacity building. Component 2 conserves critical habitats and species and improves the long-term management of Senegal's network of coastal protected areas. Component 2 includes two sub-components: Managing ecosystems in three pilot areas and strengthening the biodiversity conservation framework. Component 3 finances program management, monitoring and evaluation, and communication. It includes monitoring implementation against indicators, periodic independent evaluations, supporting the cross-sectoral structures in the pilot intervention areas to ensure coordination among various implementing agencies, and developing and implementing a communication plan to ensure the flow o f necessary information to and from stakeholders on project activities.
