The rainforests of the Congo Basin are of outstanding global importance for the environment and climate. With continued population growth and weak state capacities, the pressure on natural resources is increasing. The ecological integrity of the forests and protected areas is threatened in particular by poaching. Overall, the local population does not benefit sufficiently from protected area management and does not sufficiently support its objective of biodiversity conservation. The living conditions of the population living near the protected areas are characterized by poverty, low agricultural productivity and a lack of access to markets and social services. The planned FC measure aims to improve the living conditions of the population living near the protected areas and to increase local acceptance of biodiversity conservation. Part of the project is investments in rural economic and social infrastructure and to promote sustainable resource use and agricultural productivity in the peripheral areas of selected protected areas. The FC module thus contributes to achieving the development cooperation programme objective, which is aimed at protecting biodiversity, sustainably managing the tropical forest and improving the economic situation of the poor population. The recipient of the FC contribution is the Democratic Republic of Congo, represented by the Ministry of Finance. The project sponsor is the national protected area authority ICCN. The assumed project duration is around 5 years (3 years Phase I, 2 years Phase II). With estimated total costs of around EUR 26 million, the FC module includes a total financial contribution of EUR 25 million (Phase I EUR 10 million, Phase II 15 million).
