Integrated Resilience Programme in Somalia (WFP)

Core problem The fragile security situation in southwest Somalia and the frequency of extreme natural events has partially destroyed the livelihoods of the population and greatly increased their vulnerability. The weak state institutions are hardly able to respond effectively to these challenges. Module objective Strengthening the socio-economic resilience of individuals, households and communities by promoting their livelihoods, particularly agricultural production, and by improving access to appropriate basic services in the areas of nutrition, health, WASH and education. In the long term, this should provide the target group with better coping and adaptation mechanisms with regard to economic and climate-related shocks. Key outputs The program is being implemented jointly by UNICEF, WEP and FAO in the Gedo region in southwest Somalia and comprises the following four components i) Creating the conditions for a safe and conducive learning environment and providing quality educational opportunities, particularly for disadvantaged children and young people; ii) Improving access to basic services in the areas of nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) in order to build the resilience of the population; iii) Strengthening and diversifying livelihoods through the sustainable increase in agro-pastoral production and the development of agricultural value chains; iv) Promoting local government and administrative capacities to enable them to offer their population adequate basic services independently and sustainably. Target group The target group are needy households, children, pregnant and breastfeeding women and internally displaced persons in selected districts of the Gedo region in the federal state of Jubaland. Around 146,000 people are expected to benefit from the service packages every year. Contribution to the national implementation of Agenda 2030 The Somali government is committed to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and has aligned its national development plan with them. The project will contribute to SDGs 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and SDG 15.
