The core problem is the severe water shortage in Egypt. Since 1990, the annual availability of renewable fresh water per inhabitant has fallen below the water shortage limit of 1,000 m³ and is currently around 570 m³/inhabitant per year. Demand of around 114 billion m³/year is met by a supply of just 59 billion m³/year. Egypt continues to depend almost exclusively on the Nile as its only water res

Description
Description | The core problem is the severe water shortage in Egypt. Since 1990, the annual availability of renewable fresh water per inhabitant has fallen below the water shortage limit of 1,000 m³ and is currently around 570 m³/inhabitant per year. Demand of around 114 billion m³/year is met by a supply of just 59 billion m³/year. Egypt continues to depend almost exclusively on the Nile as its only water resource (around 95%). Around 77% of the country's water resources are used for irrigated agriculture. Poor water management, particularly in irrigated agriculture, with water use efficiency of only around 50%, further contributes to water shortages. The FC thematic project is financed through a budget loan and a grant for the accompanying measure. As part of the project, various rehabilitation measures are being carried out on the secondary canal level (branch canals) of the Egyptian irrigation system. This includes renovation work on the canal cross-section as well as renovation or replacement work on the hydraulic structures and the road bridges over the canals. Specifically, the measures are to be carried out on the two canals El Khandel El Sharky and Sahel Morkos. As part of the accompanying measure, pilots for the application of modern irrigation techniques will be selected and implemented. The project sponsor is the Egyptian Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation (MWRI). |
