Description

Description

Wild tigers form the top of the ecological pyramid in large parts of Asia's natural areas. Viable tiger populations are therefore a key indicator of intact ecosystems. Over the last 100 years, however, the number of wild tigers has fallen dramatically from an estimated 100,000 to around 3,200. Tiger habitats are also areas in which a large proportion of the local population lives in poverty or is threatened by poverty. Tiger habitats provide a variety of ecosystem services for the local population. The destruction of these habitats therefore has serious consequences for them too. The aim of the project is to improve the protected area management of tiger habitats and to protect tiger populations with the active participation of the local population. The project is being implemented as an open program on the application principle. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is the recipient of the funding contribution and the sponsor of the project and is therefore responsible for its implementation. A Programme Council, which is made up of a representative of the Federal Government (represented by KfW), IUCN and possibly other donors in the future, will decide unanimously on the financing of proposed individual measures. The estimated total costs are around EUR 23 million. A grant of EUR 20 million from the budget heading FC with regions (Title 896-01, VE 2013) is proposed to finance the project.
