Description

Description

The Namibia transport network links more than six Southern African countries, including three land-locked countries. It is strategically placed to serve the SADC region and includes four key regional corridors and ports with good capacity. The sector however has suffered from a lack of integrated planning, holding back prioritisation of investments. The Namibian government therefore decided to obtain a strategic assessment of Namibia’s transportation needs and planned solutions for the period up to 2040: the development of an integrated, multi-modal, transport plan for Namibia and the SADC region, including the development of the four main regional corridors (Trans Cunene, Trans Caprivi, Trans Kalahari and Trans Oranje). The EU-AITF technical assistance grant was used to establish an integrated transport master plan for Namibia for all four modes of transport (road, rail, air and sea). The study was finalised in May 2014 and includes the formulation of priorities for developing the transport sector in addition to short term (3-5 years) and long term (5-15 years) development plans. An indirect output is that the Masterplan has clearly indicated the rehabilitation of the rail network is a high priority. EU Financiers are envisaging to support this project. ______________________ Project Flyer
