Description

Description

Lake Victoria provides the population in the catchment area with a clean drinking water supply and forms the basis for food security and regional economic development. However, the water quality in the catchment area is deteriorating increasingly due to increased pressure on use. Without coordinated water management measures by the neighboring countries, negative effects on the immediate living situation of the population are increasing. Given the incomplete availability of data, strategic and sustainable quantitative management of water resources is hardly possible at the moment. The FC program finances services that strengthen the LVBC in its role as a regional and assertive institution. The LVBC is supported, among other things, in establishing cross-border water objectives (e.g. regionally coordinated investment plan) and the creation of associated monitoring concepts. At the same time, infrastructure investments are to be financed in the sense of an incentive system, which initially contribute to the implementation of the water objectives through wastewater and waste disposal and have a direct impact on water quality. The package of measures is intended to contribute to regional integration, biodiversity and conflict prevention beyond the environmentally friendly and economically viable management of water resources. The program's target group is indirectly the entire population in the Lake Victoria catchment area (around 40 million people) in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and Rwanda. The direct target group are the users and beneficiaries of the planned investment measures.
