Description | The Bonari Consortium was awarded the long distance and international mirror license to compete with incumbent, Embratel, in January 1999. The Bonari Consortium paid US$ 42.3 (R$55) million for the license (37.5% over Anatel's reference price). Under its license, Intelig committed to the Installation of Points of Interconnection in 38 cities (27 State Capitals and 11 cities of more than 500.000 inhabitants). The consortium is composed of British National Grid (50%), Sprint (25%), and France Telecom (25%). The company started operations on January 23 2000 under the commercial name Intelig. Intelig has laid 7500 kilometers of fiber optic cable, it is present in 37 cities, and it has the capacity to handle 70,000 calls simultaneously as of 2000. It hold 18-22% of the Brazilian long distance market. In November 2001, Intelig shareholders decided to sell the company. As of December 2003, Intelig has not been sold. In 2003, Intelig start offering local telephony in 10 cities. In August 2008, Intelig Telecom was acquired by investment company Docas Investimentos who acquired it from the UK's National Grid, Sprint Nextel and France Telecom (NYSE: FTE) for US$22mn. In December 2009, Intelig Telecomunicacoes had 100% of its shares acquired by TIM Participações, and TIM's annual report for 2009 already included the figures for Intelig in its agregated numbers. Intellig was to be acquired by TIM and had recieved approval from Antatel in August 2009. Closure of the deal was imminent. July 2006: "Brazilian telecoms service provider Brasil Telecom is in talks to buy Intelig Telecom, according to BNamericas."
