Description

Description

The Intercast and Forge Demand Response project is Australia’s largest iron casting foundry located in South Australia. IThe company has installed sophisticated energy systems that allows it to provide dispatchable demand response by powering down furnaces during peak events. The project involves the deployment of 10 MW of demand response reserve to be available for each of the three years of the trial.Key resultsAs a foundry operator Intercast & Forge is a user of power and not a reseller or retailer. The foundry relies on its ability to curtail power quickly, efficiently and safely. Intercast developed an electricity monitoring system which enables it to reduce the foundry’s electricity consumption and assist with load curtailment quickly and safely. This system turns off furnaces and other key equipment using switches in concert with AEMO curtailment requests. The test results indicate the foundry was able to successfully deliver an average of 11 MW compared to Intercast’s contracted MW capacity of 10 MW – successfully demonstrating its ability to reduce electricity consumption.
