Description

Interconnection of the electricity grid systems of Burundi, D.R. Congo, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda under the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI), coordinated by its Nile Equatorial Lakes Subsidiary Action Program (NELSAP).  The project’s main activities comprise construction of the following 400 and 220kV interconnection lines and their associated substations: (i) 260km Uganda to Kenya (Bujagali-Lessos);(ii) 172km Uganda to Rwanda (Mbarara-Mirama-Shango);(iii) 293km DRC to Rwanda (Buhandahanda-Goma-Gisenyi-Kibuye-Shango);(iv) 78km DRC to Burundi (Kamanyora-Bujumbura);(v) 143km Rwanda to Burundi (Kigoma-Butare-Ngozi-Gitega);(vi) Power System interconnection studies & Regional Operational guidelines; and(vii) Project management and coordination. The consultants commenced in February 2016 and held kick-off meetings, submitted the Inception Reports, conducted three review workshops for each study and gave training sessions in April 2016. The draft Final report was submitted in November 2016 and the reivised draft Final Report was submitted for adoption to the NELSAP Steering Committee on 23rd March 2017 bringing the assignment to a close. The financier's remarks at the Steering Committee Meeting was made by a representative of the EU delegation in Kenya. An Article on the project was prepared for publishing in July/August 2016 in the EU newsletter and various posters highlighting EU participation in the project were prepared for use during the 22-23 March 2017 NELSAP Steering Committee Workshop in Nairobi - Kenya.
