The project involves replacing the more than 100-year-old Nile dam in Assiut with a new one. The basic function of the Assiut dam is to discharge Nile water into the approximately 350 km long Ibrahimia main canal, which supplies 690,000 hectares of agricultural land with irrigation water. The project serves to maintain this function and in this way secures the income base of at least 5 million Egyptians, who mainly farm this land as low-income small farming families. The new dam will be used to integrate a hydroelectric power plant into the dam body. By generating electricity from the renewable energy source hydropower, the consumption of fossil fuels and environmentally harmful CO2 emissions are avoided compared to generation in an alternative thermal power plant, thus contributing to global environmental protection. The capital investments include the construction of the new dam with hydroelectric power plant, lock and road crossing as well as the repair of some ancillary facilities. The project also includes a package of environmental measures to prevent or reduce negative environmental effects and, where necessary, to compensate those affected. The implementation of this environmental program is supported by an accompanying FC measure.
