To address the pressing global health challenges posed by an expanding and aging population, effective translation of discoveries into healthcare systems is crucial. The recent Covid pandemic underscores the need for innovative, rapid, and global solutions. Simultaneously, there is a rising demand for personalized medicine, facilitated by advancements like multi-omics and artificial intelligence (AI). Bridging the gap between basic science, clinical research, entrepreneurial endeavours, and market implementation is essential. The International Master in Innovative Medicine (IMIM) is a two-year programme (120 ECTS), specifically designed on the intersections of basic research, clinical investigation, and commercial application. IMIM is a collaborative effort between four European universities – University of Groningen, Heidelberg University, University of Tartu, and Uppsala University. These institutions bundle their complementary expertise in molecular medicine, bioengineering, medical research, and innovative treatments. Additionally, international experts from other renowned academic and industry partners contribute to the programme. Since its establishment in 2016, IMIM has emphasized translational medical sciences, fostering connections between academia and industry while including extensive training in entrepreneurship and innovation. This is reflected in the jointly offered Bench to Bedside and Beyond (BBB) Learning Line of 20 ECTS, which culminates either in a business plan for an innovative product or a PhD proposal. Selected students start IMIM at one of the European Partner universities and proceed to another for the second year, with opportunities for internships at another academic or industry institution. Successful completion of the programme results in a Double Degree. Past IMIM editions have demonstrated that graduates are well-prepared for both Ph.D. programs and positions within the private sector.
