The project involves building a six-lane, 215-foot-tall, cable-stayed bridge crossing the Mobile River and connecting to a new, higher-and-wider bayway. It is the most expensive public works project in Alabama's history with an estimated cost of $3.2 billion to $3.5 billion. The project aims to cap potential tolls at $2.50 per trip and keep the Bankhead and Wallace tunnels toll-free, with financing expected from a federally backed low-interest loan under the Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA).
