The North Carolina Department of Transportation planned to add toll lanes to an 11-mile stretch of Interstate 77 South from uptown Charlotte to the South Carolina border to address congestion and crashes. The corridor experiences the state's highest congestion levels with over 160,000 cars daily, expected to increase by 25% by 2050. The project faced opposition from residents, particularly in historically Black neighborhoods, due to potential negative impacts. Charlotte City Council and the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization voted to rescind support for the project, leading to the loss of $700 million in critical transportation funding.
