Description

Description

The project will support the rehabilitation of 7 existing solid waste landfills in Aklavik, Fort McPherson, Inuvik, Paulatuk, Sachs Harbour, Tsiigehchic, and Ulukhaktok by increasing volumetric capacity by 107,100 cubic metres (total across all sites). The capacity increase results from excavation and diversion of 2,870 tonnes of bulky and/or hazardous recyclable materials from the existing landfill sites to facilities located offsite. The project also includes the construction and development of new hazardous waste secondary containment infrastructure to improve the long-term hazardous waste management at the facilities. This project proposes to extend the life of the existing solid waste facilities by a total of 76 years. The project will result in the reduction of soil and air pollutants through rehabilitation and capacity increase of the current solid waste sites, thus mitigating environmental risks as a result of the current hazardous waste issues and extend the current facilities’ lifespan.
