Description

Description

The project involves the design and construction of a fibre link extension of the Mackenzie Valley Fibre Link (MVFL) from Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk. The MVFL is a 1,154 km large-scale fibre broadband line, providing backbone fibre infrastructure and connectivity to local service providers. The MVFL replaces the lower-capacity and costlier microwave radio system with a high-speed fibre optic communications link that reduces the digital divide between remote northern communities and southern Canada. The project scope will extend the MVFL to Tuktoyaktuk and would be Canada’s most northern fibre installation. The project will follow the Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk Highway right-of-way, starting from Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk spanning a distance of 137 km. The project does not include last-mile infrastructure, however, these last-mile components related to the fibre backbone are intended on being constructed. The project will complete fibre-based infrastructure connections between High Level, Alberta and Tuktoyaktuk, NWT and will provide Northern communities with modern broadband Internet access. The project will also improve delivery of healthcare, education and other services and will support sustainable resource development, economic diversification and arctic science.
