Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant - Phase 1

This standalone project includes preliminary design of a new wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), development of business cases and conceptual design of resource recovery projects, ecological restoration, construction of a secondary treatment pilot testing facility, ground improvements and other enabling works. The population that will benefit from the project includes approximately 750,000 residents in the Vancouver Sewerage Area in the City of Vancouver, University of British Columbia, a portion of Richmond (YVR Airport) and Burnaby. The project will support a new WWTP in a separate future phase which will achieve compliance with the federal Wastewater Systems Effluent Regulations by providing secondary level treatment and tertiary filtration, meet seismic resiliency and sea level rise standards and enable population growth in the region. The project includes planning and capital components. Planning o Preliminary Design of the new Iona Island WWTP o Business cases and conceptual design of resource recovery projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions Capital Works o Construction of a pilot plant to evaluate wastewater secondary treatment technologies o Ground improvements to address seismic resiliency and sea level rise o Ecological restoration and park works o Upgrades to utilities and site access routes
