The Iranian electric grid is a spread-out and decentralised system relying heavily on natural gas-fired thermal plants with an installed capacity exceeding 85,000 megawatts. It includes about 130 thermal plants and up to 5,000 large and medium substations spread across the country. The grid has backup capacity, hardened critical sites, distributed generation, and the capability for certain regions to island themselves on isolated mini-grids. The largest power plant, Damavand, produces 2,868 megawatts, about 4% of national capacity. Experts say it would take a large-scale, simultaneous attack to bring the entire electricity system down at once.
