Description | Construction is underway for a $17 billion transport link connecting Iraq's Al-Faw Grand Port with Safwan Highway. The project includes a combined road and rail route with a 63km stretch featuring two bridges of 800m and 400m. The Development Road will link South Iraq with Turkey, providing a major highway and parallel rail link alternative to the Suez Canal. The Iraqi and Turkish governments manage the project with additional partnership from the UAE and Qatar governments. The first stretch is expected to be ready by 2028, with full completion by 2050 and a key rail stretch by 2031. Iraq plans to build 15 stations and industrial cities along the rail route. |
