The Second Irrigation Rehabilitation Project for Mexico will assist in financing the completion and rehabilitation of irrigation and drainage works and the provision of services to promote better irrigation farming in three irrigation districts covering 332,000 hectares. Irrigation farming plays an important part in the agricultural economy of Mexico. Many areas of Mexico are semi-arid and irrigation is essential for any reliable agricultural production. A program of completion and rehabilitation is needed to reclaim land already lost or damaged because of neglect, lack of funds to complete projects, and inadequate maintenance of older irrigation and drainage works. The project will help to alleviate these problems by: 1) constructing new drains; 2) reconditioning existing drains; 3) lining canals; and 4) improving structures and other works necessary for better water distribution. These improvements will help to increase agricultural production by preventing further deterioration of farming lands.
