Description | The Istanbul Canal project is a colossal maritime corridor initiative in Turkey aiming to create a navigable link between the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara. The canal will bisect the European side of Istanbul, effectively turning the city into an island between Asia and Europe. It is designed to relieve congestion in the Bosphorus Strait by allowing passage of 160 vessels or oil tankers annually. The canal will be 45 kilometers long, with a width varying from 400 to 1000 meters and a depth of 25 meters, and will be spanned by six bridges connecting to Istanbul's European side. The project aims to elevate Istanbul into a global trading hub and is part of Turkey's economic objectives for 2023 and 2053. |
